Home and Contents Insurance: Property, Contents and Risk Details

A home and contents insurance proposal is one that gathers relevant data that will assist in determining the property and contents to be insured. In the case of home insurance, the information gathered includes the replacement sum insured, floor area, date of construction, type of building, construction, occupancy and number of self-contained units.
The form gathers data on any risks associated with the property such as if the building is well maintained and in good condition, watertight and safe, or if it requires repairs or is undergoing renovations or susceptible to floods, erosion or subsidence.
In the case of contents insurance, the information gathered includes the sum insured, specified contents and occupants of the property. Limits are set on the value of the following unless there is an agreement on higher cover: jewellery, cameras, bicycles, collections, artworks, money and watercraft.
This paper is useful in reviewing what information is needed for home and contents insurance in New Zealand.
